Absa Vacancies – Lead : Commercial Payment Acceptance

The Lead : SME Payment Acceptance (Commercial) is responsible for driving revenue growth, expanding market share, and accelerating adoption of merchant payment solutions across the bank’s commercial and SME ecosystem. This role leads the strategy for acquiring, growing, and retaining merchant clients, with a strong focus on complex, multi-solution payment offerings.

Operating at the intersection of commercial banking, payments, and technology, this role requires deep expertise in consultative, solution-based selling within a regulated financial services environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and execute the merchant growth strategy aligned to commercial banking and payments objectives
  • Segment the merchant portfolio across mid-market and enterprise clients, tailoring strategies by industry, scale, and complexity
  • Identify and prioritize growth opportunities across card acquiring, digital payments, POS solutions, e-commerce platforms, APIs, and value-added services
  • Own merchant growth targets including revenue, active merchant base, transaction volumes, and share of wallet

Solution Sales & Client Engagement

  • Lead consultative, solutions-driven selling of integrated and complex merchant payment ecosystems
  • Partner with sales and relationship teams to structure and deliver:
    • Omnichannel payment solutions
    • Integrated POS and ERP-connected systems
    • E-commerce, marketplace, and platform-based solutions
    • API-driven and customized merchant solutions
  • Engage directly with strategic and high-value merchants to design end-to-end commercial, technical, and operational models
  • Drive a transition from product-led selling to client-centric growth strategies

Go-to-Market & Commercial Strategy

  • Design and execute go-to-market strategies across commercial banking and specialist payment channels
  • Embed merchant payment solutions as a core component of the commercial banking value proposition
  • Develop pricing strategies, bundling models, commercial structures, and incentive frameworks for complex deals
  • Create sales enablement tools including:
    • Industry-specific value propositions
    • Use-case driven solution frameworks
    • Playbooks for complex and long-cycle deals

Product & Ecosystem Development

  • Act as the commercial voice of the merchant segment into Product, Payments, and Technology teams
  • Influence product roadmap decisions based on market needs and growth opportunities
  • Ensure solutions are scalable, competitive, compliant, and operationally effective
  • Drive successful rollout, adoption, and monetization of new payment capabilities

Growth, Retention & Performance

  • Increase merchant lifetime value through cross-selling and deeper product penetration
  • Improve retention by enhancing onboarding, servicing, and overall merchant experience
  • Identify opportunities to expand share of wallet across existing merchant base
  • Own key performance indicators including:
    • Merchant revenue and margin contribution
    • Transaction volume and value growth
    • Product adoption and penetration rates
    • Conversion rates across complex sales pipelines

Governance & Leadership

  • Ensure all initiatives comply with regulatory, risk, and governance frameworks
  • Manage long-cycle, high-value deal pipelines and strategic opportunities
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team focused on merchant growth and solution delivery
  • Collaborate with senior stakeholders across Commercial Banking, Payments, Product, Risk, Legal, Compliance, and Operations
  • Represent merchant growth strategy in executive and governance forums

Requirements

  • 10 to 15+ years of experience in payments, transaction banking, or commercial banking
  • Proven track record in selling complex, technology-enabled payment solutions
  • Strong experience in merchant acquiring, digital payments, or payment ecosystems
  • Deep understanding of regulated banking environments
  • Demonstrated success in scaling revenue through structured commercial growth strategies

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Commerce, Management Studies, or a related field
  • Relevant professional qualifications will be advantageous
