Discovery Vacancies – Data Scientist
The AI Data Scientist will support the development and integration of advanced artificial intelligence solutions, including natural language processing (NLP) and large language models (LLMs). This role focuses on enhancing AI frameworks to enable intelligent decision-making, improve operational efficiency, and deliver personalized customer experiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including content specialists, data engineers, and system architects to contribute to end-to-end project delivery
- Develop and deploy scalable LLMs integrated into AI systems to strengthen natural language processing capabilities
- Apply advanced data retrieval methods such as Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), vector databases, and semantic search to improve data accuracy and relevance
- Design and implement automation workflows to increase process efficiency and reduce manual effort
- Establish and monitor performance metrics to evaluate and improve AI model effectiveness
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and ethical guidelines in all AI and data-related activities
- Prototype and experiment with machine learning models, especially in NLP and LLM applications, to enhance performance
- Stay informed on emerging trends, research, and innovations in AI and machine learning
Required Skills and Knowledge
- Proficiency in SQL and database management
- Strong knowledge of Python for data science and machine learning
- Familiarity with TensorFlow, PyTorch, NLP tools, and LLM frameworks is an advantage
- Exposure to Azure services is beneficial
- Experience with Databricks is an added advantage
Education
- Matric (required)
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related quantitative field
- Honours or Master’s degree in a relevant field is advantageous
Experience
- 1–2 years of experience in a data science or analytics environment
- Exposure to implementing machine learning workflows, particularly with LLMs, is advantageous
- Experience working with large and complex datasets, including unstructured data, is beneficial
- Experience fine-tuning open-source or proprietary large language models is an added advantage
