About the Role
The Senior Legal Counsel plays a strategic role in partnering with business units to deliver seamless, value-added legal support across operations. This position is responsible for providing expert legal guidance on commercial and corporate matters, ensuring compliance, mitigating risk, and supporting business growth across South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Main Purpose of the Role
- Provide comprehensive legal support to various business units
- Deliver practical and strategic legal advice to management
- Draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts
- Collaborate with external legal advisors on complex matters
Qualifications
- LLB Degree (essential)
- Admission as an Attorney with at least 2 years of practice experience
- Intermediate computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Experience working with contract management systems
Job Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years’ post-qualification experience in a senior legal role
- Strong knowledge of laws related to transport and logistics, including contract, corporate, and civil law
- Proven experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial agreements locally and across Sub-Saharan Africa
- In-depth understanding of legal structures within the logistics industry
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex legal concepts
- Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, with the ability to provide guidance and training to stakeholders
- Experience managing and guiding external legal counsel on litigation matters
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Strong leadership and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to manage tasks independently and communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels
- Effective time management and organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications and Competencies
- LLM or MBA (advantageous)
- Strong knowledge of the transport and logistics industry
- Confident and assertive personality with strong influencing skills
Key Responsibilities
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of corporate and commercial contracts, including supplier and customer agreements
- Monitor and interpret new and amended legislation, advising the business on risks and implications
- Ensure compliance with corporate governance standards, policies, and procedures
- Lead contract negotiations to achieve favorable outcomes for the business
- Engage with third parties to establish effective contractual relationships and minimize risks
- Identify legal matters requiring specialist input and coordinate with external counsel
- Liaise with external attorneys and prepare detailed legal briefs when required
- Manage litigation processes and provide recommendations based on legal analysis
- Draft legal opinions and conduct in-depth legal research
- Stay updated on company policies and ensure adherence across business units
