The Lead Scrum Master plays a critical role in enabling high-performing Agile teams to deliver complex digital and business solutions efficiently. This position is responsible for leading multiple Scrum teams, facilitating Agile ceremonies, and ensuring that Agile principles are consistently applied across all stages of product development.
As a Lead Scrum Master, you will guide teams in self-organisation, continuous improvement, and rapid delivery while ensuring alignment with business objectives. The role is central to fostering an Agile culture, improving delivery predictability, and enabling seamless collaboration across distributed teams and stakeholders.
This position is ideal for an experienced Agile practitioner who can balance delivery leadership, coaching, and stakeholder engagement while ensuring that Agile frameworks are effectively embedded within the organisation.
Job Purpose
The primary purpose of the Lead Scrum Master is to facilitate Agile delivery across multiple teams by ensuring effective sprint planning, execution, and continuous improvement. The role ensures that Scrum practices are correctly implemented, delivery risks are managed proactively, and teams are empowered to deliver high-quality outputs within agreed timelines and standards.
Key Responsibilities
Agile Delivery Leadership
- Lead multiple Scrum teams across various Agile sprints
- Ensure proper implementation of Scrum ceremonies including planning, daily stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives
- Monitor sprint progress and ensure timely identification and resolution of blockers
- Ensure Scrum artefacts such as product backlogs, sprint backlogs, and burn-down charts are accurately maintained
- Track delivery progress and communicate updates, risks, and dependencies to delivery and project managers
Agile Transition and Coaching
- Support teams in transitioning from traditional delivery models to Agile methodologies
- Provide expert guidance on Agile principles, frameworks, and best practices
- Coach product owners and team members on Agile adoption and continuous improvement
- Address challenges and issues arising during Agile transformation initiatives
- Support Agile maturity development across teams and departments
Delivery and Performance Management
- Ensure sprint goals are achieved within agreed timelines, scope, and quality standards
- Maintain focus on code quality, testing practices, and delivery excellence
- Support planning activities to ensure effective workload distribution and prioritisation
- Identify delivery risks and implement corrective actions proactively
- Facilitate continuous improvement across Agile teams
Stakeholder Engagement
- Maintain strong communication with business stakeholders, delivery managers, and project teams
- Facilitate discussions between technical teams and business units to ensure alignment
- Manage expectations and ensure transparency in delivery progress
- Influence stakeholders to support Agile ways of working and decision-making processes
- Present clear updates on sprint performance, risks, and delivery outcomes
Team Leadership and Collaboration
- Lead and coordinate geographically distributed Agile teams
- Foster collaboration, accountability, and high performance within teams
- Support team members in problem-solving and decision-making
- Build a culture of trust, continuous learning, and Agile excellence
- Ensure teams are effectively resourced and supported to achieve sprint objectives
Application and Service Management
- Understand service support processes within technical environments
- Support incident and problem management processes when required
- Ensure proper configuration management, release planning, and change governance
- Maintain awareness of service desk operations and technical support workflows
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of technical documentation standards
Risk, Governance, and Compliance
- Ensure adherence to Agile governance frameworks and organisational standards
- Support compliance with change management and delivery control processes
- Monitor delivery risks and escalate issues appropriately
- Ensure Agile practices align with organisational policies and quality standards
Continuous Improvement and Innovation
- Identify opportunities to improve Agile processes and delivery efficiency
- Promote best practices in Agile execution and team collaboration
- Encourage automation, process optimisation, and delivery innovation
- Drive initiatives that enhance sprint predictability and team productivity
Required Experience and Skills
- Proven experience as a Scrum Master in Agile environments
- Experience leading multiple Agile teams simultaneously
- Strong understanding of Scrum frameworks, Agile methodologies, and delivery practices
- Experience in Agile transformation and coaching teams through change
- Knowledge of incident, problem, and change management processes
- Familiarity with Agile tools, sprint tracking systems, and reporting dashboards
- Strong communication, facilitation, and stakeholder management skills

Education Requirements
